The DX7 library, finally in one place

Tens of thousands of cartridge files were gathered from the web, and every sound that appeared in many of them under different names was kept once. What's left is over 30,000 different sounds, each one a click away from your ears.

The library: categories down the left, the sound list in the middle, a cartridge being built on the right

Find it, hear it, send it

Search by name, category, source or rating, then play any sound in the browser with a real DX7 engine, or send it straight to your synth over MIDI.

  • Build 32-voice cartridges and save them as standard .syx files
  • Works with the DX7, TX802, Dexed, DreamDexed and MiniDexed
  • Play along on the on-screen keyboard or your own MIDI controller
The sound map: thousands of coloured dots, one per sound, clustered by how they are made

A map of every sound

Every sound in the library is a dot, coloured by category. Sounds built alike sit together, so you can wander from one you love to its neighbours, or explore a quiet corner for something nobody has used yet.

Click a dot to hear it. Drag it onto your cartridge.

A workshop for new FM sounds

A membership opens the tools for making sounds that never existed: on every sound in the library, all heard as you work. Every sound below was made by DX Garden; press play.

Sounds play through a real DX7 engine running in this page. Turn your volume up a little.

The editor's wave and harmonics views for E.PIANO 1

An editor you can see and hear MEMBERS

Seven knobs cover the tweaks a sound most often needs: vibrato, brightness, chorus, touch, attack, sustain and release. Turn one and the wave, its harmonics and the envelopes redraw as you go, while the sound plays from your keyboard.

Flip between the original and your edit with one key, undo anything, and save the result as a new sound.

Six operator cards, each with its frequency, level, detune, velocity curve and keyboard scaling

Every operator, drawn the way the DX7 plays it MEMBERS

Underneath, all six operators sit side by side: frequency, level, detune, touch, and keyboard scaling drawn over a real keyboard. Drag the routing, the LFO and the pitch envelope directly.

Envelopes are drawn to scale in real time, with the DX7's own rate quirks, so what you see is how it plays.

A family tree bred from E.PIANO 1 and TUB BELLS, six generations deep

Breed a family of sounds MEMBERS

Pick two parents and DX Garden breeds a whole cartridge from them: children, partners and grandchildren, six generations deep. Each child inherits its wiring and its settings gene by gene from its parents, sometimes blended, sometimes mutated, and every one is new to the library.

These four are children of E.PIANO 1 × TUB BELLS:

Six variations of E.PIANO 1, each with a description of how it sounds

Variations on anything MEMBERS

Love a sound but want it a little different? Six variations, subtle to bold, each nudged towards what real sounds of its kind do, so they stay musical. Every one comes with a plain description of how it sounds.

Three takes on E.PIANO 1:

The Random window making a sound halfway between Brass and Strings

Random sounds that make sense MEMBERS

Generate a brand-new sound in the style of any category, learned from every real sound in it, or one that falls between two: brass and strings, piano and bells. Anything too close to an existing sound is thrown away, so what you hear is genuinely new.

Or pick Alligator Mayonnaise, where every setting is random and anything goes.

The Drums and percussion window making a 909-style kick

FM drums, built like the pros build them MEMBERS

Over 50 kinds of drum and percussion, from 808 and 909 kicks to congas, cowbells, cymbals and a whole shelf of weird glitches, each from a proper FM drum recipe. Every press gives a new take.

Morphing from E.PIANO 1 to TUB BELLS, halfway

Morph from one sound to another MEMBERS

Slide from sound A to sound B and hear every step: levels, envelopes and detune blend smoothly, and the rest switches over operator by operator. Keep any blend you like.

The browser TX802: eight tone generators playing the Hall Orchestra performance

A TX802 in your browser MEMBERS

Eight tone generators, each its own DX7 engine, playing layered and split performances, including the TX802's factory set. Load voices from the library or your cartridges, play it from your keyboard, and send it to a real TX802 or read one back, with live edits as you go.
